Guru is the person who shades the knowledge like ganga & leads his disciples from darkness of light. In ancient times when disciples used to take free education by staying in gurus ashram they used to give Guru dakshina to their guru on this day as per their wish we celebrate this day as a festival. In ancient time the Order of Guru was the order of God. There are many proof of this, but the best example is that Eaklavya, who had receive education by keeping the idol of Guru Drona. but still without any doubt, on asking for the thumb of the right hand in guru Dakshina of Guru drona, he immediately gave it by cutting off his thumb. Although today rarely anyone follows the order of Guru Like Eaklavya. but this custom of celebrating the festival on the day of Guru Purnima continue till date.
