Mentor, Mentee And The Art Of Mentoring

Mentors are very important in your lives. You need someone who can guide you through your journey. Here's a look at mentor, mentorship, mentorship and coaching are similar, and how does good mentors look like.

Who is mentor?

If you ask definition, here it is:

“an experienced person who advises and helps somebody with less experience over a period of time.”

But, mentor and mentorship has some deep meaning within itself.

A Mentor takes a long-range view of your growth and development. He always helps you see the destination but does not give you a detailed map to get there. He will offer encouragement and cheerleading.

The mentor might not exactly instruct you (give you coaching or training). Instead, he will challenge you and encourage you to think through issues and approaches. He will just guide you through like a Charioteer(सारथी)

Eg. Shri Krishna was a mentor to Arjuna who guided him in War. Krishna doesn't fight with his opponents.

Mentorship is the influence, guidance, or direction given by a mentor to mentee.

Comparison of Mentoring and Coaching-

As said above, Mentoring and Coaching are Similar but Not the Same. ‘Both mentoring and coaching offer incredibly valuable developmental support.’ However, one offers high-level guidance for long-term development, while the other helps provide a more immediate improvement in targeted areas.

How Good Mentors Look like?

A mentor always makes their mentee feel that everything is within their reach.

A mentor never makes their mentee feel dumb.

This why is - when looking for mentors, here are my 3 tips

  1. Look for mentors who are in the same experience band as yours. So that what is obvious and not obvious to them is also obvious and not obvious to you.
  2. Look for mentors who look at the world differently from you. So that you always see an alternate way of looking at the same thing, when you speak with them.
  3. Look for mentors who are going through the same thing you are going through (as similar as possible). So that they can relate to what you are going through. They just have a different take on it, because of point 2 above.

Note: These are just my views regarding mentoring. These points may vary. These are not hard and fast rules.

"If you can't see where you are going, ask someone who has been there before."
