Unlike today's visiting arenas for sporting and musical events, ancient Romans had free admission to the Colosseum. Not only that, but they were fed throughout the event. Emperors are said to have done this to gain popularity throughout the Roman Empire. Events at the Colosseum can last upto 100 days, so the no entrance fee and meals were required.

Over a million wild animals are estimated to have died. Some say the slaughter in the arenas contributed to the rapid decline in tiger, lion and jaguar numbers around the world, wiping out entire animal species in North Africa and the Mediterranean.

The Colosseum has a whopping 80 entrance arches. This meant that on the busiest days, it was easy for officials to let people in and out to watch the matches and fights.

In fact, this name was not always called the Colosseum. It was originally known as the Amphitheater, named after the Imperial dynasty. It was built by Emperor Vespasian, a founding member of the Flavian dynasty.

The ancient Romans used large amounts of marble to build the Colosseum. It is estimated that they used about 100,000 cubic yards of marble, which was transported to the site in 200 oxcarts. They also used 1.1 million tons of concrete, stone and brick. Today, building the Colosseum costs around 39 million tons of concrete, stone and brick. This equates to almost $43 million.
