Greeting to all readers, Feminism is a very hotly debated topic with each one having a different understanding of it. Today I wish to make my readers here have a little understanding of this term which has overtime evolved into a movement. Lets start with a little history of how this began.
Women in the west, mainly Europe started the protests and demands for equality and rights for women. From France to Germany to other European nations, this movement started gathering support. At that time women who were demanding equality were criticized and faced several backlash. however, they never gave up and over years, many more came forward in demand of women rights. This is how the first understanding of the term feminism came in being.
Feminism was a political, economic and a cultural movement aimed at establishing equal rights and legal protection for women.
Over the years, the world has come to accept other sexes apart from the female and the males. With rising emergence and recognition of the LGBT+ community, feminism has accommodated the equality struggles of this community as well. Along with women these sexes have also suffered and have begun to be recognized recently only.
Feminism's evolution is evident through it's 4 waves which had all different agendas. This also shows the change in acceptance of mainly women in the society. The first wave was simple with simply the recognition of women as humans and not as property and get them equality and the recent fourth wave includes equality for all sexes including women and crimes against women(#metoomovement).
How simple this may seem, then why are some people against it, why can't all sexes be treated equally??? Well, the answer lies in the fact that there are some people who have spread false understanding of this concept. The “pseudo-feminists” are of the opinion that women are superior to men which has stirred disapproval within men. Another misunderstanding is by those women who say that they aren't feminists as they don't hate men and love doing housework. These misunderstanding was given rise to anti-feminist movements.
We need to clarify to each one that feminism doesn't equate to misandry(dislike or prejudice against me). Feminism just demands equality of rights and opportunity. We also need to remember the difference between EQUALITY AND EQUITY. For eg.: equality is providing equal sized stools to 3 kids of different heights to see over a wall whereas equity is to provide the 3 kids with different sized stools so that all 3 kids can see over the wall equally.
It must be noted that the concept of equality existed in India long before in the early Vedic period where women studied, performed rituals just like men and worked as per their wish. Indian women got the right to vote also before American women. Indian women are lucky but we only can create a better society for ourselves.
