According to Hindu mythology, the divine couple Lord Shiva and Goddess founded Madurai.  In the month of April Madurai people celebrates Goddess Meenakshi Weeding and Chithirai thiruvizha . This festival is celebrated for 1 Month . This festivals was divided in the duration of 15 days .

The story behind meenakshi thirkalyanam is Meenakshi requested Shiva to marry her and he very benignly consented. Shiva told her to return to Madurai and wait for him. He arrived eight days later in the resplendent form of Sundareswarar, the Handsome Lord and married the beautiful Meenakshi in a magnificent ceremony called Thirukalyanam . This happens in the first 15 days of the Month .

The next 15 days is known as “CHITHIRAI FESTIVAL ” or  “CHITHIRAI THIRUVIZHA” . This festival happens on the next day of meenakshi thirukalyanam one of the famous temple of madurai after meenakshi temple is “AZHAGAR TEMPLE” . the distance between the Madurai and  Azhagar temple and is known as “KALLAR NAATU PAGUTHI” . The appearance of Azhagar is on his right hand he has “VALARI” and on his left hand he has “SATTAI KAMBU” his hair was tied in a bun , he has his own earrings  the dress hw wore is known as"KANGHU" a Black saree  he arrives as kallazhagar .

According to History Goddess Meenakshi is sister of Kallazhagar . During the wedding of Meenakshi with Sundareshwar Azhagar arrives late to the wedding during this short period Meenakshi's wedding will be over . Azhagar felt angry toward Meenakshi so he took bath in Vaigai river and started his journey towards hometown without seeing his sister Meenakshi . This fstival is knawan as “Descent into Alaghar River”
