to murder one another

The interpersonal contact in a multi-player setting was the next step. DUNGEN was the first of these games. DUNGEN pitted players against one another as they attempted to complete a series of quests. Every time the user signed on, DUNGEN provided new settings and players.

With more and more households being computer savvy, the video game craze began in the late 1970s. People began writing their own games for home computers as a normal corollary. These home-grown games were traded and sold in local markets by these programming hobbyists.

Home gaming consoles that used game cartridges were another improvement in the 1970s. This meant that instead of having bulky game console systems, people could collect game cartridges for a single base device.

The 1980s – a brief respite before the storm

The video and computer game craze grew in popularity in the 1980s, but online gaming was not yet a reality. New games with improved sound and graphics were published, and they quickly became successful. Pole Position and Pac-Man were two of the most famous games. Nintendo's first video game console was released in the 1980s.

The transition of the 1990s begins.

Because of the emergence of 3-D and multimedia, the 1990s saw phenomenal growth in both popularity and technology.

The intelligent adventure game Myst was the first to use the CD-ROM format. FPS (first-person shooter) games like Quake were made possible by more advanced 3-D graphics hardware.

The rapid development of the Internet, MUDs (multi-user dungeons), and video games exploded in popularity in the late 1990s. People from all over the world competed in FPS games, real-time strategy games (RTS games), and third-person games like Grand Theft Auto, thanks to new and enhanced graphical interfaces.

This was also the period when websites began to sell online games like tetris, ping pong, Mario Bros., Super Mario, and other free online flash and non-flash related games in exchange for registering. This cemented online gaming's place in the public consciousness.

The planet is but a sandbox in the twenty-first century. The DVD-CD-ROM dominated the early years of the twenty-first century.

It has altered the way people play video games. The new gaming systems, such as Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox, have networking features that enable people from all over the world to play with each other in real time. Playing these video games is now feasible in the true sense of the term, thanks to exponentially increasing broadband internet services.

The only disadvantage of online gaming technology's relentless evolution is that what you buy today might be obsolete next year. Fortunately for serious gamers, there is a sizable resale market for these online games. This resale market is just one more facet of online gaming's ever-changing past.
