A Russian man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing three friends and eating their body parts. Years later, a court convicted Eduard Valerievich Seleznev of Arkhangelsk, in Russia's northwestern region. The 51-year-old killed and ate three friends between March 2016 and March 2017. Selesnev, known as the 'Arkhangelsk cannibal', killed three men, aged 59, 43 and 34. He stabs his drunken friends to death when they lose consciousness. Then their bodies would be boiled and eaten. With the ease of chopping chicken and other things, he would cut up the prey and store the meat he wanted to eat, and put the rest in a plastic bag and throw it into a nearby lake.
Selesnev was born in 1969 in northwestern Russia. He was a diligent student from an early age. The smoker was reportedly involved in theft at a young age. On several occasions, he has been convicted of fraud. After his release in 2000, he began living in basements. There he killed and ate cats, dogs and birds. According to reports from the trial, Selesnev killed his first victim in 2016. The victim is said to be a homeless man who shared a room with him in a shelter. The homeless man was stabbed to death with an axe. He boiled some of the remains as it was difficult to eat the thick body part. The rest were put in plastic bags and thrown into a nearby river. Selesnev's crime went unnoticed for two years.
He later moved into the flat of one of the victims. The victim's parents were told that their son had gone to work in another city. However, the parents found the unpacked meat lying on the floor and found their son's jacket and bank card with Selesnev's passport. This led to suspicion on the part of the accused. They complained to the police. He repeated the same old story to the police who came to search for the missing person. He told police he knew nothing about the interrogation and that the victim had gone to the city in search of work. The other two victims had no family. So no one came looking for them.
The body of a man was found in the lake while the investigation was continuing. The investigation reached Eduard Valerievich Seleznev after it was discovered that some parts of the body had been cut off. In addition to humans, Selesnev captured and cooked cats, dogs, birds, and other small animals from the streets. When the bodies of the victims were finally found, police said they were in a state of decay, partially mutilated and unidentifiable.
Selesnev has already served 13 years in prison for another double murder. The psychiatrists who examined him declared him irrational and fully responsible for the murder. Selesnev was ordered to stand trial again for his latest offenses. Cannibalism is not included in the Russian Criminal Code, so the defendant was charged with murder and misuse of the victim's body parts. After the Russian Supreme Court re-evaluated all the evidence, Selesnev was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. In addition, the court ordered a fine of one million rubles. The court ruled that the money should be transferred to the victim's family.
