What is Web 3.0?

Web 3.0 is an upcoming web technology that is gaining  importance in recent years. It is an evolution of the third generation of the world wide web(internet) in web technologies, also known as 'web 3' or ‘internet 3.0’. It is termed as decentralized web application (also known as dApp) or Semantic Web. It is the type of read-write-interact web, in which the web content makes use of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain technology which can include 3D graphics, apps, and websites. 

“Web 3.0 is data-driven using a machine learning-based understanding of data to create an intelligent, secured, and connected web usage for the user.”

The main features of web 3.0 include: 

• Artificial intelligence(AI)
• 3D Graphics
• Connectivity
• Ubiquity (Accessible and available at any time and at any place)
• Blockchain
• Decentralized 
• Semantic web
• Edge computing   

The earlier versions of web technologies before Web 3.0 were as follows:

1. Web 1.0:   It is the first generation web application based on a search of information and is read-only. It started in the year 1990 to 2004, which were static web and personal websites also called Syntactic Web. An example of Web 1.0 is Wikipedia which is only readable. Other examples include e-commerce webpages and basic web pages which are created using HTML, Java, and Javascript.  
2. Web 2.0:   It is the second generation web technology, which is the read-write web page, also called Social Web. Today's social media, social networking, podcasts, web content voting, etc consists mainly of Web 2.0  dynamic interactive web applications. Common examples are Facebook(Meta), Twitter, Google, Dropbox, Whatsapp, etc. It is mainly created using Ajax, Javascript, CSS, and HTML5 user interface-based front-end web technologies. Users can upload pictures, post their data, read it, and may use those applications for promoting business.  

•  If web 2.0 is the product, web 3.0 is the owner of that product, the user owns his data(i.e. web 3.0 has a data ownership feature). If the web 2.0 app is a game app, then web 3.0 is the creator and ownership of it. 
• It provides personalization, and interrupted services. Web 3.0 allows for direct ownership through NFT(Non-fungible token). One can get profits based on the data and can share the data for the same. 
• Web 3.0 is used in smart contracts, and decentralised autonomous organizations  (DAOs). It is also now interlinked to metaverse recently. 
• There are many applications. Enlisting some of the recent applications of Web 3.0 are:

1. Wolfram Alpha - It is a computational knowledge engine that is used to search and show on the user interface which can collect enough amount of information from a database on the web. It shows data like domain, ports, GeoIP, online advertising revenue, etc.
2. Siri - Apple's Siri is one of the examples of the semantic web. It is a voice recognition and AI assistants based software that performs complex and personalized commands. It is similar to Alexa of Amazon.
3. Facebook/Meta- It is a top social media platform as well as a web 3.0 application. 
4. Brave - Brave Browser is developed by Mozilla Foundation, which is much faster and safer that also blocks ads, intrusive advertisements, trackers, etc. using blockchain technology.

• Importance and future of Web 3.0

For two or more decades internet is upgrading and getting developed day by day. Web 3.0 is the future of the current internet which has main principles like openness, no permission to access, data privacy and protection. It is gaining it's importance in e-commerce,digital marketing, cryptocurrencies with help of internet of things(IoT) and blockchain technologies. 

Due to concept of semantic web and decentralised network in web 3.0, the decentralised apps (dApps) and DeFi(Decentralised Finance) are gaining importance along with recent technologies. Web 3.0 is scalable, secured, and based on monetization in current crypto technology. In the future, there might be the use of virtual reality and 3D graphics as well and still, it is concerning the details and control of data and activities of web apps.
