Chandro and Prakashi Tomar, the world's oldest sharpshooters - Rediff Sports

At the age of 65, most people give up their dreams and desires and stay at home, especially women. Most people want to be able to look after the house for the rest of the time. But two women from the village of Johi in Uttar Pradesh, in their sixties, set out on an adventure. They proved that age is just a number and that age is not a barrier to learning new things. They are Chandra Tomar and her sister Prakashi Tomar, the oldest female sharpshooters in the world. The world calls them 'shooter nurses'.

They have won medals and trophies. Reaching the eighties, they are still able to aim the bullets accurately without losing sight or sight. They are the ones who proved that women can do it all in a rural area of Uttar Pradesh where sharpshooting was considered something that only men can do. Chandra Tomar is now 89 years old and Prakashi Tomar is 87 years old. But they changed not only their way of life but also the attitude of the people there. It showed the world that a woman can do multi-tasking. Their story begins in 1998 when Rajpal Singh founded the Johi Rifle Association and started a temporary shooting range. There, air pistols were used instead of bullets in guns. Chandra, along with her granddaughter Shefali, started it to educate the youth, its founders Rajpal Singh and Farooq Pathan. Chandro was just a spectator at the time. Chandra would also go with her granddaughter Shefali, who is just 12 years old, during training. She was the only woman there. One day Chandro asked Shefali, who was panicking at not being able to use the pistol properly, 'Why are you so scared? Look at me 'Chandra said and took the gun, loaded it, and shot. It pierced the bull's eye. This is the first time Chandra has taken the gun. Pathan was impressed to see this. But reports from People say that's just what's happening. They hit another shot, and it hit the target. It was the beginning of their love affair with shooting. Everything changed in one day.

Pathan persuaded his grandmother and granddaughter to continue training. But Chandro feared the family. They feared that their wishes would be accepted in a patriarchal society. In Uttar Pradesh, which has a high poverty rate, girls have less access to education. Most women get married at a young age and stay at home looking after their children, nieces, and nephews. Chandro was born in 1931 into a large farming family. The 70-member house always had jobs. She went to school and got married at the age of 15 and lived for her family for 50 years. However, Chandra decided to get shooting training. 'Every time I picked up a gun, I was so excited,' she said. A few months after starting training, Pathan formed a team and decided to take part in the shooting championship in the state of Punjab. Several children, including Shefali, were selected for it. Chandra Tomar went with them and they are leaving Uttar Pradesh for the first time. The rest of their family did not know this. Chandra also participated in the competition. For the first time that day, they used a real gun. Chandro returned that day with a silver medal.

Later a local newspaper published an article about them and there was a big uproar in the house. 'My husband and brothers were very angry,' Chandro recalled. They said, 'What do people think? What a shame to have an old man your age carry a gun, 'said the family. They forbade him to go to the range. However, the children supported them. 'I listened quietly to what they were saying. But I was not ready to change my decision. In any case, I have decided to continue, "said Chandro. Eventually, their niece, Prakashi Tomar, joined them. Chandra Tomar went from house to house promoting shooting in a conservative society where women had to forget their heads and faces and had no right to look into the eyes when talking to men. Families were asked to send their daughters to sports. They were able to overcome reluctant parents. When a shooting team started in the village, the Tomar family provided about half a dozen members, including Prakashi Tomar.

Prakashi and Chandra get up at four in the morning every day. The shooting training will be done along with the tasks of turning the cow, looking after its contents, cooking food and working in the fields. Both have won more than 100 medals at various championships across the country. Along with several other Presidential Awards, Prakashi Tomar has won a Woman Power Award presented by the President of India. Seema Tomar, daughter of Prakashi Tomar, became the first Indian woman to win a silver medal at the 2010 International Shooting Sports Federation World Cup. Chandro's granddaughter Shefali is also an international shooter. The Tomar family is now building a shooting range for homeless children in their homes. Her life was the inspiration for the film 'Sant Ki Ankh'.
