A nature lover's paradise, Haridwar presents a kaleidoscope of Indian culture and civilization. Haridwar is also known as 'Gateway of the Gods' also known as Mayapuri, Kapila, Gangadwar. Followers of Lord Shiva (Har) and followers of Lord Vishnu (Hari) pronounce this place Hardwar and Hardwar respectively as some say. It is also an entry point for Dev Bhoomi and Char Dham (four major pilgrimage centers in Uttarakhand) Viz. Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.

Legendary king Bhagirath is said to have brought the Ganges from heaven to earth to bring salvation to his ancestors. It is also said that Haridwar is deified by the presence of three gods; Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. It is said that Lord Vishnu had his footprints on the rock placed in the upper wall of Har-Ki-Pauri where Saint Ganga touched him all the time. Devoted devotees feel they can go to heaven by receiving salvation after taking a dip in the sacred Ganges in Haridwar.

Haridwar is also one of the four; where Kumbh Mela occurs after a rotation every 12 years and Ardh Kumbh every six years. It is said that drops of Amrit (Elixir) fall on Brahmkund of Har-Ki-Pauri, so it is considered a very auspicious immersion in Brahmakund on that particular day and when Jupiter (Brahaspati) comes to the sign. Aquarius (Kumbh) Every twelve years the Maha Kumbh fair is held in Haridwar. However, in addition to the mystical and mythical aura, Haridwar cast another spell on the guest. As one of the oldest cities, Haridwar is mentioned in the ancient Hindu scriptures as it traverses life and time stretching from the period of Buudha to the more recent British period. Haridwar is not only the abode of the tired physically, mentally and spiritually, but also a center of attraction for many people, to study art, science and culture. Haridwar's longstanding position as a great source of Ayurvedic medicines and herbal remedies along with the unique Gurukul traditional education school, scenic beauty and lush greenery… gives the city of unique flavors and charms; one of the resorts not to be missed in one's itinerary for Uttarakhand - Destination for all seasons.

Haridwar is one of the first towns where Ganga emerges from the mountains to hit the plane. And that's why the water is crystal clear and pure. Lush green forests and small ponds add to the scenic beauty of this sacred land. Rajaji National Park is just 10 km from Haridwar. It is an ideal destination for wildlife and adventure lovers. In the evening, the ghats are breathtakingly beautiful as thousands of diyas (lamps) and marigold flowers float and illuminate the sacred waters.

Haridwar, as it is today, is not only religiously significant, but also has another temple of modern civilization i.e. BHEL, a 'Navratna PSU' to its credit beyond the Industrial Park integrated (IIE) established in Haridwar under SIIDCUL covers an area of about 2034 acres. IIT Roorkee (Earlier University of Roorkee) in Roorkee is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of science and engineering. Another university in the district, named Gurukul, has a large campus, offering traditional teachings of this kind.
