PREHISTORIC PAINTING
These are in the form of murals , which were made by the
prehistoric man using his tools on the inner walls of the caves .
Bhimbetka Paintings : These hills are situated in the Raisena
districts of Madhya Pradesh , in the Vindhya Mountains .
In year 2003 , UNESCO included this site in the list of World
Heritage Site .
These hills have the rocky terrain and composed of sandstone . The
paintings are located on the walls and roofs of the caves .
These paintings evolved over a large duration of time .
These paintings include those of a ‘Mesolithic Boar’ Painted in dark
red , animals like elephant , rhinoceros , boar , barasingha , spotted
deer , cattle and snake etc .
Some paintings also includes the battle scenes .PAINTINGS OF HARAPPAN CIVILISATION
The evidence of palnting activitles of Harappan civilisation
are seen in the remains of earthen wares and toys.
The earthen wares were first coloured red and then were
painted using black colours. The utensils were painted and
various figures of trees, (e.g. Peepal, Neem, Date and
Banana tree etc) animals and birds (Deer, Cows, Bulls,
Peacocks, Hens, Fishes, Turtles etc) and geometrical designs
were made on them.
Drawings of humans are also obtained from some sites. A
fisherman carrying basket on his shoulders had been Jogimara is located on the hills of Raigarh, in Sarguja
region of Chhattisgarh . the caves of Jogimara, Sita bengara,
Lakshman bengara and other smaller caves are located. It is
among the oldest theatre of Asia. It is believed that the 'Uttarramacharitam' play was
staged here. There is a large opening over the Jogimara caves, by which
the natural light reached into the cave. This is also called the
temple of God Varuna
.
The walls of this caves contain some of the oldest
wall paintings of India
.
Humans, elephants and shark fishes are drawn on the walls
of these caves. Only red, black and yellow colours had been used for
the purpose of painting. The background is white everywhere. These caves are
important because they are the earliest example ofBasel Convention
