English Honours- Worth The Time

Hey all,

I’ve been thinking to write on this topic for a very long time now and just now I thought that it should be discussed with you all. So, there is a general ideology about an English honours student that they must be at par in English and all of those things because the person is pursuing a degree in that particular subject. But the case is different. In an English honours programme, a student is not taught vocabulary, grammar or how to write and speak more effectively in English but an ardent reader and a good writer can pursue this course as it is all about reading and not just reading but reading between the lines. The student is required to read all the texts and novels prescribed and then do thorough research on the same.

The course is about your analysis, perception, opinion and your perspective of the novel. Every perspective is welcomed in this course but only till the time you back it up with proper reasoning and some statements or facts that prove your statement. Whatever your perspective is, it is allowed. So, the course is a deep analysis of a particular piece of work and of several and different approaches with which the students approach the text. Every student has a different and unique mindset through which they approach the text and then conclude it through their understanding and that is what is unique about it. Such liberty of thought is never given in any subject. So, it’s neither a theatrical nor a practical subject. Your analysis is respected and valued. Just present your opinion and back it up with reason and you are good to go.

Also, another thing that most of the students are not aware of is that the subject widens and broadens a student’s thinking and perception to a great extent. We are taught the contemporary happenings and also the then-contemporary society and the prevailing are portrayed bluntly and as it is. No moulding or manipulation of any fact is done. This way we get to learn every writer’s opinion and perspective about then society and also about their writing style and form too.

So, this was about the course and how I perceive it. Now, I would love to know your reading of the subject and also about the misconceptions that you had earlier.

Thank you.
