Valiya Thamburati is an ancestral goddess of people of North Kerela, who gave up her own place to the two Aryan goddess. Kerela strikes perfect balance between modern and heritage kerela and has India's highest Human development index.
Namboodiris were the traditional feudal elite, who are believed to have come to Kerela from outside. They owned large portion of land in the Malabar region and preassumed the title of the holiest of human beings and the representatives of God on Earth. Men and women of lower caste were required to maintain an exact distance from them. People from lower caste were required to remove their clothing from upper body part while interacting with them and were required to lie on the ground when they crossed by in order to avoid pollution the Brahmins Namboodiris. If a person from whom they considered as lower touched them, the later was required to bathe immediately and read much of the sacred books and change the sacred thread. The victim of this illogical practice fought against many of these social evils were later converted into gods or theyyam.
Today more than four hundred fifty types of Theyyam is performed in Malabar region and this is something which cannot be staged as a show, one can only witness it when it is happening. When this happens people from all around the town gathers in an uncountable number to seek blessings of the god after the performance of dance rituals . It is said there was a god named Thamburati who was idolised by people who lived here. One day two of the aryan goddesses came to this region through the sea. They went to the house nearby which was already occupied by another god, who found with them and shooed them away. Looking for another place, the two Aryan goddesses came to the next house where Thamburati lived. Thamburati saw that the two goddess were feverish and tearful from the fight they had at the previous house and when she saw this she decided to give up her own place to them and left her own house. So the festival of this temple is about inviting her back to the temple and it is called Kulichezhulpu.
