Kohinoor which means “ the mountain of lights” is a colourless diamond whose year of discovery is still a disputed topic among historians. There are different estimates of it's year of discovery but there is no exact information. According to Theo Metcalfe, the then civil servant of British claimed and wrote in his report that according to traditions this diamond was discovered during the lifetime of lord Krishna. But according to historians this diamond was found in the kollur mines in the Golconda region of Andhra Pradesh. Not only it's place of origin but also it's year of origin has also divided historians claims.
Some believes it to be discovered in guntur mines which is in Andhrapradesh in the 13th century during the kakatya dynasty rule . Some other historians argues that the diamond was discovered in the 16 th century in Golconda. When it was discovered it was believed to be the biggest diamond ever known to mankind.
Currently this diamond is embedded in the crown of Queen of England and is kept in the tower of London's jewel House for many years. The Kohinoor diamond is supposedly believed to be “ cursed” . One Ancient Hindu text describes this diamond as:
“ He who owns the Diamond will own the world, but will also know all it's misfortunes. Only god or a woman can wear it with impunity”.
So after British East India defeated Ranjit Singh's army in the middle of 18th century acquired this diamond and was later shipped it to Britain. That year it travelled 6,700 km on a ship and only queen is allowed to wear the Kohinoor diamond, men are prohibited to wear it. It may sound as superstition to term Kohinoor as “ the cursed diamond” but there is a clear evidence that who ever has owned Kohinoor had lived lives full of bloodshed, violence and betrayals.
The kakatiya dynasty supposedly the first owner of this prized possession was defeated by Alauddin khilji. Alauddin khilji died while Kohinoor was in his possession. Mughals who acquired Kohinoor after defeating kakatya dynasty lost the battle to Nadir Shah. Nadir Shah died soon after acquiring it and likewise Ahmad Shah Durrani who claimed it from Nadir Shah died while Kohinoor was in his possession. Similarly Ranjit Singh died and his death took a heavy toll on his empire which collapsed soon after his death.
The government of India, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan have all claimed it's ownership of this diamond but the government of Uk lives in constant denial stating that it was rightfully acquired by them.
