Shani Shinganapur is a village in the state of Maharashtra situated in the nevasa taluka in the district of ahmednagar. Once you visit this village, nothing will seem ordinary to you and what will hit you most is that there in not a single door or window in any of the houses. After seeing some of the houses without door or windows one will may consider it abandoned but soon one will realise that each and every house including the shops are doorless and windowless. Since the houses don't have doors and windows one can clearly see into their house performing their daily activities like having breakfast together, dressing up , cooking.
So what's the history behind this strange and fearless attitude of not having doors and windows. It is said about three hundred years ago it rained heavily and severe flood struck the village. A big slab of black rock reached up on the shore of the peninsula river that used to flow there at that time. When the rain stopped and flood subsided the villagers spotted that “ big slab of black rock” and it started bleeding as soon as it was touched with a stick. At that night Shani , the most feared god of Hindu religion appeared in the dream of village leader. Next day he addressed the villagers. He described “ Shani god said that rock is his icon and he had chosen this village to reside in from now” . Shani God promised him to live there and protect the people of village from any danger. But he had one condition he asked him to put the rock in town out in open space so he could observe the whole village and restricted the building of any roof over the slab.
The villagers acted according to the condition and as a result the rock was placed on a platform in the heart of the town. After placing the “ black slab of rock” the villagers immediately felt protected having Shani god watch over them every second of their lives. They soon got rid off their locks because they no longer needed it . Also they removed all their doors so that Shani God could enter freely and keep his watchful protective eyes over them. Everything inside their home whether it is Money or the jewellery, are left entirely unsecured and anyone who dares to steal is said to have punished with blindness.
