Hello all, So this again gonna be a useful blog for exam aspirants who are striving to clear the NET exam (English).
In this blog, we are seeing the literary influence of Geoffrey Chaucer. This is consisting of three stages.
Chaucer was vet much influenced by French poetry. He translated “Roman De la Rose” works into English. This helped him to fashion his style of writing. He learnt the charm of simplicity from French poetry. In 1369, he wrote “The book of Duchesse” on the death of Blanche, and an allegory of John of Gaunt's wife.
2. Italian period:
Chaucer went to Italy, he saw a new world of art and literature. He read Dante's ‘divine comedy'; Petrarch's ‘sonnets’; Boccacio's ‘Decameron’. Then his important works are House of fame, the parliament of fowls, Troylus and crusade, and the legend of good women. House of fame is a dream allegory written under Dante's influence. The legend of good women planned into 19 tales of virtuous women of antiquity, but only eight tales were completed and the 9th tale is incomplete. Troylus and crusade is the best narrative work written in heroic couplets in English for the first time, written under the influence of Boccacio's ‘Filostrato’.
3. English poetry:
A few smaller poems by Chaucer are Former age, Fortune, Truth, Gentilesse, and The lake of steadfastness. His monumental work is the Canterbury tales. 116 tales were planned but 24 were only written. It is about the class society in England. Most importantly, the two tales in Chaucer, 'Tale of Melibeus' and 'The Parsons tale' are prose tales. The rest of the tales are composed in the deca syllable and heroic couplet. The 29 pilgrims represent society. It gives a picture of Medieval life in England. It was the first great story in verse.
Listen to yourself and don't compare with others. Just enjoy reading literature while you enjoy you won't think of anything. Thank you.
