The company quickly developed the first sound recording device called the tape recorder. But Morita realized that no one would buy it because it was too big. Since it was post-war, the Japanese were not in a position to pay much. Immediately Morita's brain worked and he got a license for the transistor from Bell Labs in the United States and made a small radio that could fit in a pocket. The plan to create a new product using technology from America and sell it to Americans has paid off.
Pocket Radio was a huge hit. The reason for that is Morita's emphasis on quality control and the creation of a separate department for quality control. And he wanted not only Japan but the world to be the market for his products. So everyone, along with the staff, flipped through the dictionaries in search of a new word that was easy to say. Sonus was the word they got then. In 1958, Morita changed the name of the company to Sony (SONY) Corporation by combining the word Sonus, which means sound in Latin, and the name of the band "Sonny Boys", which was popular in America at the time.
After two years, he started a branch in America and moved there with his family. Morita then focused on making weird electronic products that customers didn't expect. His innovative ideas created new cultures and new ways of life. For example, when traveling with her children, she noticed that they brought along a large tape recorder. Its insignificance fueled his thinking. He wondered what if he could shrink the size so that he could carry it wherever he went. The Walkman sprang to his mind.
Do you know what his supporters said when he was engaged in that endeavor? Arudam said that anyone who walks around with a microphone in their ear will say the world is crazy, so it won't sell. But what can mere fountains do to a man who has the courage to create the future.
In 1976, the Walkman hit the market. It preys on youths all over the world. Then Morita's empire began to grow at breakneck speed. Sony has introduced many electronic products like television and video recorder to the world. Under Morita's leadership, Sony became the first Japanese company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1970. After that Sony ventured into various industries. According to a 2000 poll, Americans chose Sony as their favorite symbol over Coca-Cola.
The name SONY is famous not only in America but all over the world. A hard worker who values time like gold, Morita is always active. At the age of 60, he learned the sports of swimming, scuba diving and tennis. He loved painting and music. Morita was 72 years old when he suffered a stroke one morning while playing tennis and was forced to withdraw from all activities.
