Hi again. Welcome or welcome back my dear bloggers to my daily blogs. I hope you all are enjoying your day and are in good health.
Today we will be talking about an architecture of some past, built with perfection and beauty, in our own nation. The Victoria Memorial building is a large building made of marble. It is located in central kolkata. The Victoria Memorial was built between the years 1906 and 1921. This building is dedicated to the memory of the Empress Victoria, and is now a very famous museum.
This building was built about 100 years ago, in 1921, and still stands strong. The architects of this masterpiece of an architecture are William Emerson and Vincent Esch.
I n january of 1901, Lord Curzon, suggested to built a great memorial on the death of Empress Victoria. The foundation stone was laid by The Prince of Wales in 1906 and was finally opened to the public in 1921. The funding of this building was mainly provided by the British Officials and the individuals of India.
Let us have a building, spacious, monumental, phenomenal and grand, to which every person who is a newcomer in Kolkata will remember and turn, to which all the civilian population, Native and European, will flock. This is where all the people will learn the lessons of our history and feel the revival before their own eyes the marvels of our past.
Said Lord Curzon
The gardens around this building were designed by Lord Redesdale along with the help of David Prain. The marble used in this construction was the white Makrana marble. In its design, it portrays the Taj Mahal's amazing aesthetics with having its dome, octagon shaped Chattris, terrace and corner towers.
The victoria memorial contains about 25 galleries for exhibitions. It also has a rare collection of popular and antiquarian books like the works of William Shakespeare, the Arabian Nights and many more.
The gardens of this has about 64 acres, which is about 260,000 m². And it all is maintained by a team of 21 gardeners and staff members. The gallery has many portraits of Empress Victoria and Prince Albert. The oil paintings are inspired by famous paintings from London.
