History of Mahabalipuram Temple
Mamallapuram is located 56 km south of Chennai on the coast of the Bay of Bengal in the Chengalpattu district. This city, considered the pride of Tamil Nadu, was a port about two thousand years ago. The Pallava kings who ruled Kanchipuram in the 7th century AD were largely responsible for the development of the city. The port played an important role in trade during the reign of King Pallava Narasimha Varman I (630 - 668 AD).
King Pallava Narasimha Varman is commonly known as "Mamallan" and the port is known as "Mamallapuram". Eventually the term Mamalai became "Mamallapuram" and we mistakenly called it Mahabalipuram. The port, which has stood for centuries, is believed to have been destroyed by seawater intrusion
