Pakistani authorities reopened a border crossing with Afghanistan on Monday after nearly a week of closure due to an attack in the area amid a rise in bilateral tensions and the latest clashes along the Durand Line.
Reopened is the Chaman crossing, known as the 'Friendship Gate', which was closed on 13 November following an attack from Afghan territory that killed a Pakistani soldier, as Reported by Geo TV.
During the reopening ceremony, border officials from both countries shook hands, and officials in Kabul and Islamabad agreed that all types of vehicles would be able to pass through again and deal with any security threats in the area.
The Taliban said on Thursday that the situation along the border is "normal" after a week of fighting. Afghanistan and Pakistan were engaged in heavy fighting along the border, known as the Durand Line.
In fact, officials from the two countries agreed in January to set up a joint ministerial committee to resolve disputes over the 2,640-km Durand Line, which marks the border between the two countries.
The Durand Line was established in 1893 following an agreement between the British Foreign Secretary, Mortimer Durand, and Abdur Rahman Khan, the Emir of Afghanistan, to delimit spheres of influence in India.
After the independence of Pakistan, Islamabad recognized it as bordering Afghanistan, although Kabul did not take any such step. The line divides the Pashtun and Baloch communities living on either side of the border, which has led to a dispute between the two countries.
