One method by this magnetism produced electricity is through the Movement of a magnet past a stationary wire. if you connect a very sensitive wire, the meter across the end of a stationary wire, and then a magnet move past the wire., the meter needle is deflected. this deflection indicates the electricity is produced in the wire.
Repeating the movement and observing the meter movement closely, you will see that the meter moves only while the magnet is passing near the wire. placing the magnet near the wire and holding it at rest, you will observe no deflection in the meter.
Moving the magnet from the position, however, does cause the meter to deflect and shows that, alone, the magnet and wires are not able to produce electricity.in order to deflect the needle. movements of the magnet past the wire are necessary.
Movement is necessary because the magnetic field around a magnet produces an electric current in a wire only when the magnetic field is moved across the wire. when the magnet and its field are stationary, the field across the wire and not produced a movement of electrons.
In studying the movement effect a magnet of past a wire, you discovered that electricity was produced only while the magnet and its field are actually moving past the wire. if you move the wire past a stationary magnet, you will again observe a deflection of the meter. this deflection will occur only while the wire is moving across the magnetic field.
To use magnetism to produce electricity, you may either move a magnetic field across the wire or move a wire across a magnetic field. for a continuous source of electricity, however, you need to maintain a continuous motion of either the wire or the magnetic field.
To provide continuous motion the wire and the magnet would need to move back and forth continuously . a more practical way is to cause the wire to travel in a circle through the magnetic field.
This method of producing electricity--that of traveling in a circle past the magnet --is the principle of the electric generator and is the source of most electricity used for electric power.
To increase the amount of electricity that can be produced by moving past wire a magnet, you might increase the length of the wire that passes through the magnetic field, use a stronger magnet or move the wire faster. the length of the wire can be increased a winding it is several turns to from a coll. moving the coll past the magnet will results in a much greater deflection of the meter than restudied with a single wire.
