Welcome back! It's been long days that I'm writing blog. yes as discussed previously about the  working of SIM, in the same blog I have introduced a technology called e-SIM. In this blog I'm going to describe briefly about that technology.

e-SIM is a programmable SIM card i.e., embedded directly into a device.

The e-SIM standard was first released in 2016. End users can add or remove operators of their choice without physically swapping the SIM from device.

All e-SIM are programmed with a permanent eSIM ID (EID) at the factory. How we need the IMEI number to use the mobile network with physical SIM the same way we need an EID ( Embedded Identity Document ) number for e-SIM.

Normally IC ( Integrated circuit ) located on removable UICC ( Universal Integrated Circuit Card ) typically made of PVC, e-SIM consists of software installed onto an e-UICC chip permanently attached to a device.

wherever there is a technology or anything that must have both the side that is advantages and disadvantages, but the success depends on existence of that technology by overcoming high risk disadvantages and holding lot of advantages. let us discuss the advantages and disadvantages in order to decide whether this technology is going to replace the old existing technology.

Coming to positive side;

  1. The space consumption can be reduced in the mobile device by replacing the existing physical SIM with e-SIM because the sim  tray slot is not required for this new one though it is a embedded.
  2. Secondly security wise this is comparatively  high secure because the SIM cannot be stolen without the device. and the port out scams can be reduced.
  3. There is no concept of Physical damage of SIM when using e-SIM.
  4. SIM duplication scams can be reduced.
  5. We can maintain multiple profile with single e-SIM that means we can have an account with different carriers and we can toggle easily without changing SIM card physically.
  6. And porting is also easy where we need not to reach an operators office each and every time when we want to port.
  7. And this is going to be the best one i.e., EASY TO LOCATE that means if you loose your mobile phone it is very easy to find the device with the e-SIM where the network operators can monitor e-SIM over the air.

Coming to disadvantage side;

  1. main disadvantage is e-SIM is not compatible with the old phone models.
  2. The plans are very expensive.
  3. Switching from Physical SIM to e-SIM costs more.
  4. As an e-SIM profile has been stored in cloud, the retrieving profile data from cloud is time consuming.
  5. We cannot use on other phones because it is embedded.

If you want to know how to switch your physical SIM to e-SIM or wanted to know what are the all the phones presently have that feature give a comment. I will let you know in another blog.

<!!THANK YOU!!>
