Mucormycosis generally effects people who have health issue or by taking medicines which reduces the immunity power of the person or by lowering the body's ability to fight germs and sickness. This condition is not contagious, it does not spread from person to person. The people who have Diabetes , people who are taking steroids' are at higher rate of risk .
Mucormycosis is a rare dangerous infection caused by group of molds called mucormycetes and often effects lungs, skin, brain. Mucormycosis is also known as black fungus or zygomycosis. This fungi lives in soil and in decaying organic matter such as rotten wood, leaves, composite piles, etc.
PREVENTION OF MUCORMYCOSIS
*Wear N95 mask whenever you go out.
*Avoid getting in contact with soil or dust particles because there will be high risk of fungus entering into your body.
*Avoid visiting construction or excavated sites .
*Avoid going to places where floodwater exists or water damaged buildings after natural disasters like hurricanes ,floods etc.
*If you have weak immunity power or weak body then avoid going out or participating in any activities.
*An anti-fungal intravenous injection which costs Rs 3,500 a dose and has to be administered every day for up to eight weeks .
SYMPTOMS OF BLACK FUNGUS
*Nasal congestion
*Blood in your stool
*Chest pain
*Breathing problem
*Diarrhea
*Facial pain
*Headache
*Loss of vision or pain in eyes
*Black crusts in nose
*Bloody vomits
*Swelling in cheeks and eyes
*Coughing
*Gastrointestinal bleeding
* Skin is infected, it will be red and swollen.
WHO ARE AT RISK?
People who have diabetes ,especially when its not in control are at risk. HIV and AIDS patients are at risk. Cancer patients are at risk. When a patient undergoes organ transplant or stem cell transplant are at high risk. People who have low white blood cell count are at risk. Patients who use long term steroids' are at high risk. If patient is using injected drug use or have high levels of iron content in patient body is also at risk. People with bad health from poor nutrition are also at high risk.
Mucormycosis is deadly without treatment because the infection is so rare, the exact mortality rate isn't clear, bt researchers estimate that overall, 54% of people with mucormycosis die.
The death depends on which part of the body is affected. The outlook is better for people who have sinus infections than it is for lung or brain infections.
