Sometimes I look back at the time when India was lagging far behind in terms of internet penetration that a common person hardly understood how much power internet has.
Before the entry of Jio in 2016, mobile data prices espacially 3G/4G were so high that even I being from upper middle class background wasn't able to pay for the services and was stuck using 2G. I remember once in a while recharging my number with a 3G internet pack and watching videos for 1 full day that I could never watch otherwise as I am from a rural area so having a broadband internet connection is out of question. I had to keep my phone near a window to get a bare minimum signal to be able to use 3G services. I used to think if there would be a day when this internet would work fine and I could use whatever I wanted.
The 3G/4G coverages were very erratic. People never thought voice calling could ever be replaced. That was the primary mode of communication.
Then came Reliance Industries with their own version of 4G only network that changed India forever. Voice calling became free, data was dirt cheap. People couldn't resist the offers being provided by Jio and millions switched from their 2G/3G devices to 4G ones only to be able use Jio.
The level of investment made my Reliance into Jio was unmatched. The 4G coverage provided at the launch was most likely better than the competition only to get improved later on.
I started using Jio from 2016 only and the experience was unmatched, the coverages were very good compared to what the competition was offering and I could use internet for watching movies, downloading games, enjoy online gaming,
Slowly OTT platforms, online shopping started to gain momentum. With more people having access to cheap, fast internet meant gains for internet based companies and start-ups
Now poor could use 4G and keep themselves entertained. Internet was too affordable. The affordibility came at a cost.
Fake news, hate speeches, vulgar content which earlier was very limited spread everywhere too fast. The poor, uneducated masses couldn't differentiate between true and false news, claims and viral content.
In the end, I will conclude by saying Jio really changed India and now it is upto us how we use this internet for the betterment of us and our fellow countrymen.
