Hello dear readers
Today is 16th October and this day is considered as the World Spine Day. Any damage to the backbone can affect the person physically, mentally and emotionally. Yes, you read it right. I did not know about this day earlier and many of us are not aware about the importance of good health of backbone so I thought to share it with you all. Due to COVID-19, the culture of work from home has increased too much. According to a study, 41.2% of people reported to be suffering from back pain and 23.5% people from neck pain during this period of work from home. Moreover, sitting in poor posture, using mobile phones too much with the head bent downwards is also responsible.
The effects of damaged backbone on health-
Pain in back- Continuously sitting for long hours can make the disc compact. The lack of physical activities makes the nearby ligaments tight and it reduces the flexibility of the backbone resulting in back pain.
Pain in neck and shoulders- When there is excessive pressure on the cervical vertebrae (joint between head and spine) pain starts in the neck. It also affects the muscles of shoulders and back.
Problem of brain fog- When there is no movement then the amount of blood and oxygen reaching the brain gets reduced. It can affect the thinking ability of the person.
Effect on behaviour- Sitting for a long period affects the neuroplasticity and the activities of neurons. As a result of this, a person can become emotionally weak and depressed.
Tips to maintain the health of your spinal cord -
Bridge pose helps in making the hip muscles stronger, supports the lower back and makes the backbone strong.
Try to take a walk for six minutes after a sitting of one hour to avoid any damage to the spinal cord. You can also try other yogasana like cat and cow pose etc. Always consult a doctor.
