The expectations from an intern are quite a lot. The challenges one face during an internship can be varied and span across different levels depending on the field and company. As you may hear from some, they may say that ‘Oh I honestly had a great experience. This line might be used by any intern for varied reasons.
The kind of experience each one looks for is different. Personally, I feel an internship should be a wholesome experience with a half pot full of learning to a half pot of making and enjoying life with the colleagues/friends one makes.
There are two types of perceptions relating to interns - one is in less pay let us make them work more and extract whatever work possible and the other being interns are freshers in the business with no past experience in the field and will leave after a certain period say 1 - 6 months so no point in wasting time and energy training them. They might give out confidential information privy to the company as well.
Both perceptions according to me are vile and fruitless making no sense. Interns are also human beings with the same amount of effort to prove themselves as maybe any other permanent employee out there.
Yes, it definitely depends on the personality of the intern, someone who will want to eagerly learn and someone who would want to just chill out and of course getting a good mentor is the next most important thing an intern looks for.
Honestly, from my personal experience, I feel the landscape needs a change, some people might agree with me some might not but that's alright every body has a right to reserve their experiences and opinions.
Reputed multinational firms and even smaller companies should be more open to taking interns and training them well, ensuring as I said previously they have a wholesome experience. In return, the company should also lend out additional perks to the one who takes on the onus to train the intern.
To achieve success one must keep on trying in this case both the intern and the company mentor as well. Like coal mines need to be tapped and effort needs to be made to find hidden treasures and gems, similarly, interns should also not be left on their own without being tapped. One can never say who can turn out to be a treasure in this huge world.
