Would a Macaw make a good pet ? It depends on you . When adding a Macaw to your family, you need to consider whether you have space , time , personality, and other factors that would make a Macaw a good companion for you. Because Macaws require spacious housing and are long-lived, adding a Macaw to the family need careful thought.

Macaws are most likely to be sold at bird supply stores or from bird breeders . They are also sometimes offered for adoption by bird rescue organisations.

HEALTH AND COMMON CONDITIONS

Macaws can be prone to feather destroying behaviours. If a full veterinary examination rules out medical causes of feather plucking, boredom and/or lack of appropriate mental stimulation may be a cause. Provide your Macaw with an enriching environment with plenty of play and exercise opportunities, such as B climbing nets and ropes , in addition to toys.

Macaws are also more susceptible to proventricular dilation disease (PPD), psittacine break and feather disease (PBFD), psittacosis , break malocclusion, and aspergillosis. Regular check ups by a veterinarian who knows birds can help to identify and treat many disease processes at an early stage.

It is normal for a Macaw to sneeze a few times a day to clear dust to clear dust or dander from nostrils, which may be accompanied by a clear discharge. If the sneezing persists and /or  the discharge is not a clear colour,  contact your avian veterinarian.

CARE AND FEEDING

A Macaw needs a cage large enough to prevent its lait feathers from hitting  the cage floor, which can cause the tail feathers to bend or break. Overall, a Macaw will require a much larger cage and play area than other parrot species , so a potential owner should consider space considerations.

In their natural habitat, Macaws feed on native seeds , fruits , flowers , leaves , plam nuts , figs , nectar and , in some regions, clay from exposed riverbanks. The nutritional needs of some Macaw species differ from those of from other parrots because they require more fat in their diet. The wild Macaw's diet is typically high in fat, which is acceptable for a bird that spends it's day flying through the rainforest, finding food, nesting, and raising chicks.

Companion Macaws tend to have much simpler lives than their wild counterparts, but they miss out on the ability to forage, a behaviour that is quite natural. Lafeber Birdseed is ideal for the feisty Macaw, abird that opportunity to tear up its meals. The berry and cake shapes of these foods invite more interaction. Macaws love Pellet Berries, Avian Cakes and Nutri Berries.
