Obeli N Krishna wrote the screenplay and directed the movie Pathu Thala, which was funded by KE Gnanavel Raja and Jayantilal Gada under the production companies Studio Green and Pen Studios, respectively. The film stars Silambarasan TR, Priya Bhavani Shankar, and Gautham Karthik in the key roles, and Gautham Vasudev Menon, Anu Sithara, Kalaiyarasan, Teejay Arunasalam, Santhosh Prathap, and Redin Kingsley are among the talented actors who play supporting roles. Farook J. Basha is in charge of the cinematography, and AR Rahman is in charge of the music. It takes quite a bit of guts for Silambarasan TR (Simbu) to choose a project where he isn't playing the classic hero and is largely absent in the first of the picture after delivering two back-to-back successful movies in the last couple of years.
The Story starts off in a gloomy manner. Chief Minister Arunmozhi (Santhosh Prathap), who has established a vaccine welfare programme, is introduced to us. Cold war is ongoing with deputy chief minister Naanjilaar Gunasekaran (Gautham Menon). Even if he is late, he still stands with Arunmozhi. Does this remind you of politics in Tamil Nadu? It ought to! Soon after, CM Arunmozhi vanishes and Guna (Gautham Karthik), a mobster and undercover cop, is introduced to us.
AGR, also known as AG Raavanan, is a notorious gangster who controls the government. Guna is given the task of approaching AGR so he can find out about the CM's whereabouts and acquire evidence. Will Guna complete his task? Will he reveal his identity?
For those who are unaware, Pathu Thala is an adaption of Mufti by Kannada director Narthan. With Pathu Thala, director Obeli N Krishna—who also wrote the screenplay—took a predictable path. There is a checklist of elements that we have seen in every gangster movie throughout the years. The feared criminal, who is also a hero, has a positive side that is highlighted by his background. There is a backstory that explains the hero's transformation into a criminal. Despite checking all the boxes, Pathu Thala doesn't thrill you.
A few hand-selected scenes from the mafia drama will give you chills. Consider Simbu's introduction as an illustration. Simbu's AGR is teased to the audience through graphics, but Simbu's face is not revealed. We can't help but applaud him when he makes his dramatic entrance towards the end of the half to the pounding score of AR Rahman. Similar to that, the roof will fall during the chariot scene starring Simbu and Gautham Karthik and the climax.
