Book Review: Low By Jeet Thayil

Hey everyone! I am here again with a new book review. I have read this book during pandemic for the first time.

I feel greatly gratified by stories about characters grieving something grave but who still manage to cut through it bravely, mostly rescued by their dark sense of humor. I think it offers the reader the right kind of balance, two extreme ends to keep oscillating between, a perfect mix of sweet and salty, all while being in the grey area stretching in the middle.

After his wife Aki dies by suicide, Dominic arrives in Bombay with her ashes and the intent to immerse them somewhere in the sea. A seemingly unrecoverable drug addict, he resorts to taking several varieties of them in attempts to deflect his consciousness from this tragedy that he must now gradually train himself to become aki-n with. (See what I did there? :P). On the flight, he befriends Payal, a woman of incredible wealth, whom he'd later run into, and with her take onto multiple (mis)adventures, along with other people, eventually motioning this book forward.

Now I don't want to commit to an indecisive mind or even plainly say that I didn't enjoy this book at all, but the fact that it has taken me almost two months to start writing down my thoughts on it is enough proof that it won't stay with me. I mean, it was a nice read, I had good fun while at it, some parts were redeeming and introspective too, but will I ever return to it? Mostly no. I have nothing against it, but nothing for it that I hold dearly and fancy, either.

At best, Low felt like eating the Peach Apricot ice cream from Naturals. It would tempt me only because it's sweet much like Jeet's one-time read-worthy writing - but won't leave me wanting for more, for its generally disappointing flavour. And if you will, think of this stupid analogy in light of the book, there might be potential for some sense there. Also, I know I began by saying that I love stories like this but it just didn't happen this time around and that's fine.

In one obnoxious scene, Dominic impulsively snorts his wife's ashes and I still haven't been able to comprehend that yet. WTF dude and WHY?

Content of this book is really amazing. Just go for it. Have a nice day!
