Here's a list of magazines that pay up to $1 per word or more to freelance authors.

This list contains ten publications. I've separated them into categories.

1. California Magazine is an editorially independent general-interest publication published by the Cal Alumni Association that covers ideas and inventions from the University of California, Berkeley. They're looking for pitches from both young and seasoned authors. They want writers to pitch their stories, not subjects, that have a clear UC Berkeley connection but will be interesting to readers regardless of where they attended school. Their stories fall into the following categories in general: profiles/human interest, science and scholarship, history, arts, and news and events. 2. Epic is a publishing house that specializes in remarkable true stories. Their "authors" travel the globe in search of unknown experiences. Stories of wartime romance, unlikely savants, deranged detectives, gentleman criminals, and love-struck murderers capture the thrill of living.” They pay $1 to $2 per word, according to their deputy editor. 3. The Fuller Project is a national non-profit newsroom that covers topics that concern women in the United States and around the world. They raise awareness, highlight injustices, and encourage people to take action. They are still looking for news on problems that concern women in the United States and around the world. 4. Enemy Magazine is a print publication that reports on "control violations in news deserts and underrepresented groups across the United States." They pay $1 per term, according to their creator. They welcome essays with a point of view (400 to 1,200 words). They pay up to $1.00 per word, according to payment records.

7. GEN is a Medium publication that covers politics, power, and culture. Each week, they're looking for 3 to 4 pieces by black critics (on music, art, books, food, and so on).
