Hello candlemonk family, How are you all? I hope each one of you must be healthy & happy in your life. I am Vibhu & in today's blog I am going to share an amazing science fact with you. So, let's start.
It is well known & we all know that a fish can not and do not survive for a considerable time without water. A fish dies within moment if the fish is brought on land out of water. But you would be amazed to know that there is a fish that can survive even on land, without water. Yes, that's true & that fish is called Eel.
Most of the Eel fish lives in seas which is their natural habitat. Some of these also lives in fresh-water as well. Those Eels which lives in fresh water doesn't find it difficult to walk or live on land. But all the Eels lays their eggs in saline/sea-water therefore the fresh water Eels have to go to saline/sea water to lay their eggs. So, to move from fresh water to sea water they might have to walk or crawl on land for several days. OMG! Did you know that?
Now the question arises here is why doesn't these fish dies while moving on the land? Let's find out the answer.
Actually, there is a slimy & sticky chemical called “Mucus” present in the body of these fish. This Mucus prevents their body from drying on the land and also helps them to respire/breathe through this via their skin (cutaneous respiration). This is the reason why Eels can survive on the land as well. But we often do not see Eels because they usually travel or completes their journey during night time. We can find some of them in ponds & wells. These Eels are usually the female ones. The Male Eel is smaller than the female in size. Male Eels are 25 to 45 cms in length.
During the mating time, both the male & female Eels moves into deep water. They lays their eggs & dies within moment. Yes, that is true and that is how they are made naturally to function. Eels are strong & thick layered fish. Fish from Europe has a special character that they do not lays eggs in saline water, so they move to fresh water for that. When the eggs reaches to their larval stage, the gulf stream brings them towards the east. Within two to three years these larvae reaches the bank of European rivers & now the grown up Eels moves out of them over there.
That's the end of today's science-fact blog friends. I hope this fact about Eel was worth your time. So don't forget to like, comment & share this post.
Now I will see you in the next ost on some other different & amazing topic. Till then take care of yourself and your family.
Thank You.
