Are your own habits stopping you from achieving your goals?
Do you feel small, or unconfident about yourself?
You are not alone. 90% of people struggle to achieve their goals because of toxic habits.
And they could achieve their goals, once they found a way to break those habits.
In this blog post, I will share 7 such toxic habits that may be damaging your self worth.
By knowing and accepting them, you can break them & start feeling good about yourself.
Habit change takes time. So, be sure to bookmark this page & revisit it.
Even if you can change 1 habit in the next few years, you will make significant changes in your personal and professional life.
The first habit in this list is
In your heart, you know you want to do something.
At the least, you know what you don’t want to do.
For e.g: You may not want Engineering. You may want to be a writer.
But you end up with Engineering because that's what the world wants.
Or maybe it is a smartphone you want to buy, but don’t, because your friends won’t like it.
If this is something you do, then know that it is totally ok to feel scared about the world.
The solution to this is to do something without asking or looking for permission.
For e.g: If you want to be a writer, try part time writing jobs. Or buy a new phone that you like.
It is ok if you make a mistake. You can correct it on the go. But don’t remain stuck and let the world dictate terms to you.
This is the most common toxic habit that can make you ineffective.
So you decide to try out something new.
Just as you are about to try it, you hear voices like:
“What makes you think you are good at this? Do you know how bad you write emails?”
“Your business idea is totally worthless. No one will buy it!”
Even if you succeed, this voice tells you that your success was a fluke. Or that you were lucky.
If this is a habit you have, try to remember how this voice was fed to you.
Maybe you failed in your past. Or maybe someone just told you that you disappoint them.
As a result, your mind has judged yourself as a failure.
Next time a negative thought comes to you, accept it & promise that you will do better than that.
Write a story of your own victory in a notebook. And mentally play out that story in your mind.
Next time this negative voice comes, replace it with this new positive story.
Most importantly, start taking action.
Waiting for the best time to start is another dangerous habit that keeps you unhappy.
Maybe you want to try a different career.
Or maybe you always wanted to start a business.
Instead of starting it, you wait for the most perfect moment. It could be something like:
“I will change my career when both my parents, finally understand me fully”
“I will start my business when my girlfriend agrees that I am both smart & tall”
If this is you, remember that your parents may never agree. And your girlfriend will always disagree.
So, if you wait for these moments, you will always be stuck.
Instead, start from somewhere. Maybe you could start by taking some online classes or meeting people and discussing your ideas. Just don’t wait for the golden moment.
Build your skills or network to achieve your goals.
Ok. Let’s say you want to become a writer.
And somehow, you decide to create a blog and start writing 3 blogs every week.
Now, instead of writing 3 blogs, you get lost in taking the perfect action.
You tell yourself and expect something like this
“When I write, my article should shake the world”
“When someone reads it, I should touch their heart and make them like this article”
You think, right off the bat, you can write flawlessly.
And when you see that your writing is flawed, you stop writing & go back to being stuck.
If this is you, don’t worry. Keep taking action.
Remember that you are running a marathon. As long as you keep taking action and improving daily, you will feel better.
Maybe you couldn’t write all your ideas in an article. 2 years later, you may make a masterpiece. So, spit perfection on its face and keep taking action.
You want success to come to you fast.
Like for e.g: you may expect that 100K views & 100$ from your first blog post.
So, you try 100 tactics and shortcuts to succeed and eventually fail.
If success is just a destination, you will always be under pressure to achieve it fast.
But, when you follow a process, success will come to you as a by-product.
So, maybe instead of writing just 1 blog, you can make a list of 100 blog topics, people want to read about and start writing about it.
Slowly and steadily, you will start achieving success
When you don’t give yourself time to fail, you fail to grow and succeed.
For example, you decide to write in Candlemonk and make money from writing blogs.
But once you write your first post, you realize that it's not easy.
And so, you change decisions. You tell me that maybe this isn’t working for you.
Maybe it's not your cup of tea.
Now if this is you, it is ok. And there is no harm in quitting or saying no.
But first, make sure you try what you want for at least 2-3 months.
Give the best, regularly do what you wanted to do for 3 months. And even after that, if you feel the same, you can move on.
Remember that it is ok to quit. But, give yourself enough time to fail before you quit.
Because this failure will make you better elsewhere.
Maybe no one stood by your side when you needed people around you.
Maybe your dad, mom, teachers or boss never understood you.
Infact, these are the reasons why you feel so low about yourself.
Guess what? That is ok too.
Whatever happened is due to them. But, how your life has to be, is with you at this moment.
Like how this famous saying goes : Kill your haters with your smile. Bury them with your success.
Stand Up for yourself like your best friend. Focus on improving yourself, and achieving success.
If you are feeling low or useless or like a total failure, remember one thing.
You can change it by taking small positive steps towards it.
Remember to start slow and be consistent.
