The term "robot" itself is relatively modern, coined in 1920 by Czech writer Karel Čapek in his play "R.U.R." (Rossum's Universal Robots). However, the idea of automata, mechanical devices designed to imitate human or animal actions, dates back to ancient times.

### **1. **Ancient Automata:**
  - **China:** The earliest recorded automaton dates back to ancient China, around the 3rd century BCE. An engineer named Yan Shi created a humanoid figure that could move and play music.
  - **Ancient Greece:** Inventors like Archytas of Tarentum in ancient Greece (circa 4th century BCE) were known for creating simple mechanical birds and other automatons.

### **2. **Al-Jazari's Automata (12th Century):**
  - **Innovative Engineer:** Al-Jazari, a Muslim engineer in the 12th century, designed a series of mechanical devices and automatons in his famous book "The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices." One of his creations was a humanoid automaton that served drinks.

### **3. **Leonardo da Vinci (15th Century):**
  - **Sketches and Designs:** Leonardo da Vinci, during the Renaissance, sketched and conceptualized various mechanical devices. While some were never built in his lifetime, his designs included a knight-like automaton and a mechanical lion.
