The desert biome is an ecosystem that forms due to the low level of rainfall it receives each year. Deserts cover about 20% of the Earth. There are four major types of desert in this biome - hot and dry, semiarid, coastal, and cold. They are all able to inhabit plant and animal life that are able to survive there.

A desert receives less than 10 inches of rain a year.A lot of the animals that live in the desert are nocturnal. The Sahara is the largest hot desert on Earth.Antarctica is the largest cold desert on Earth.20 percent of the world's land surface is desert .Animals have learned to adapt to desert conditions.

The Desert Biome is an important part of Earth because many animals live in it and it is a source of sand. Also, a lot of oil is often found under many deserts.Several species of vultures also live in the desert to scavenge on animal remains. The Desert Biome is alsoimportant because it has its own ecosystem.

Human activities such as firewood gathering and the grazing of animals are also converting semiarid regions into deserts, a process known as desertification. Population growth and greater demand for land are serious obstacles in the effort to combat this problem. The four main types of desert include hot and dry deserts, semi-arid deserts, coastaldeserts, and cold deserts.

The largest desert on earth is the Antarctic desert, covering the continent of Antarcticawith a size of around 5.5 million square miles. The term desert includes polar deserts, subtropical deserts, cold winter and cool coastal deserts.

Desert Plants Store Water Thought plants wither away in these terrains? Not quite. Their leaves store up water and use it during times of drought. Most desert plants have leaves that are nicely padded to lock in the moisture whenever it does rain.

Plantlife is scarce in deserts. You will find many shrubs, bushes, and a few kinds of grass in desert terrain. The roots of desert plants run very deep into the ground since they look for moisture and collect it whenever it rains. One of the best Sahara desert facts is that it’s the largest hot desert in the world. Temperatures average around 122 degrees Celsius during the summers. You can spot wandering birds in deserts. Tough desert animals like camels, tortoise and snakesadapt to harsh environments. Most desert animals live in their dwellings throughout the day, and some live underground. You will find desert tortoises in the southwestern parts of the United States
