Namaste everyone! Hope you are doing well😄
Today's blog is just one of my random thoughts. I would like to share it with you all..Feel free to express your opinion regarding the matter on the comments.
We might have once wondered why India has less number of athletes when compared to population. The various reasons for this according to my opinion is explained below:
1. PARENTS
While we say parents, they are not fully responsible for this. The age old tradition & viewpoint of Indians that studying is the main thing that defines the success of someone is the reason. Our parents are broughtup in such a thinking process and hence they forcefully try to implement this in their child's lives. Sports is always considered a leisure activity just for fun or relaxation. It is never considered as a career opportunity.
2. STUDYING GIVEN MORE IMPORTANCE
As we all know, studying is given more than enough importance in indian society. It is treated as a sole marking scale which is used to value a child. Not eveyone is like this and things are changing nowadays. However giving unwanted importance to studying and making it a reason to stop students from getting into sports is a shameful thing.
3. NO EXPOSURE
This may not be true for everyone. But from where i come from, south india especially; exposure to various sports fields are very low. How would we know if someone is talented, if they are not even aware of the existence of the sport. Even if someone is aware, there are low or no facilities to get enough exposure or knowledge about these sports. The main way through which we get introduced to sports is via school. However most of the time schools provide only 1 or 2 sports for the students to choose from. This is the main reason why youth/students have very less exposure to the wide variety of sports fields and activities.
4. NO OPPORTUNITY
Even if we are aware of various sports, there is no opportunity to try out the sports or grow the skills. Don't we all used to have that one math teacher who used to take all those PE(physical education) periods for completing their portion? Here we can see another big mistake. Physical and Co-curricular activities have equal importance to theory studies. While being aware of this students are still given only 1 or 2 periods a week for physical education training.
How could we expect more medals in olympics when we are not even willing to give adequate time for students to identify or train their skills on various sports. This is a major problem of our current education system.
Changes can be made only by parents and law makers.
Being a huge and diverse country with 138 crore population, we have lot more to offer to the world. We have to find more Neeraj Chopras' and Mary koms' among the millions who are denied an opportunity to participate.
