Let's Talk About Mental Health- You Matter, Your Story Matters

How often have you heard your parents say- it’s just in your head! Maybe you are overthinking it; perhaps you should get out of the house more often and get a breath of fresh air.

Maa, Paa, and to all those who told me this before and over and over again. I want to get fresh air, maybe I am overthinking, and perhaps I realise that someday the worst place you can be is your head, and perhaps for once you all should listen to me.

Do you realise it's unfair to compare trauma? I mean you don't see the world that I do, I have come to realise that no amount of financial aid, or materialistic baggage, or reaching the height of success is more important than your mental health. You can be as powerful and as successful as you want but if you come home and find yourself sobbing in the loneliness of your room, what worth is your fortune?

For so long our society has seen mental health as taboo, oh so are mentally sick? Or are you tuning into a maniac? For once, literally for once, can we stop because the one is already having enough. We don’t understand what it feels like to be in an unhealthy mind space until we are at one.

Being in the space, feels like a loop that seems never-ending, it feels like nothing else makes more sense than covering yourself with the blanket of insecurities, you not only lose track of time but also you lose a part of yourself in the process, you forget to eat or even drink, it takes an immense amount of tenacity to shift from one pair of cloth to another, even your favourite sitcoms stops bringing you joy, it feels like this would never end, your body would never stop crunching to the fear of the same old demons attacking you over and over.

The world is already full of heartbreaks and never-ending struggles, everyone is fighting their own battles, some do it loudly while others are in a silent war. Everyone puts on the happy filter on social media and pretends they are living their best lives only to sob at night and longing for it to get better.

We as a society have made it impossible to let someone be just the way they are. Someone is always too extra, too shy, too fat, too skinny, too judgemental, and happy to pretend it to be fake. Just stop? Instead of concentrating on others' lives, we could introspect ourselves to realise that we should love our flaws and we should own them, and then maybe we would stop putting labels on others.

Most importantly, perhaps we would stop judging ourselves with the same labels. I mean how is it even significant, let someone do whatever makes them or brings them joy on a gloomy day, for once we should stop attacking their shame.

“The best thing you can offer anyone is your company.” The very same logic applies to mental health as well. There is no proven cure for mental health. It's like the game of Jenga, where you need to protect your pillars from all the external forces, and if it falls, you rebuild it again.

I am sure there are advised counselling and prescribed medicines, but if you as an individual finds someone suffering offer them your company, lend them your ears, be there for them, because the world is too harsh, so if you could be someone’s sunshine on a gloomy day, then be it.

This is to each one of those who see mental health as a sickness. For instance, if our lungs show evidence of dysfunction, you just don't stop breathing; yeah, You seek medication and monitor your environment until you are well again. Yeah, the same with mental health, it's a part of the body, soul and day to day experience, if you as an individual feel it's hard to cope with any kind of stress or trauma, seek help, talk about it to your friends, parents, join therapy groups because You Matter and does Your Story. Maybe you could draw inspiration to others who are fighting the same battle, and seeing you perhaps they won't give up too.
