On your deathbed, given a choice of death for your endless sufferings of life with prolonged and constant suffering, what would you choose?
Let me introduce you to the concept of β Euthanasia β.
The name is given to the concept where individuals can decide to end their lives to get rid of the endless suffering which relatively has no cure. It could be sensitive to talk about something like that because on what basis do we decide that it's the end of life? Death is an inevitable truth, there is no denying that but what good is a life which turns out to be more exhausting and consuming than death itself?
Assisted Suicide is another name given to the concept of Euthanasia. It is a relatively evolving concept where countries have been debating if it's the right course or not!! Countries like Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium has been extensively being recognised for Death/ Suicide tourism, where individuals are allowed to end their lives. With recent development, Netherlands has sanctioned Euthanasia even over the age of 12. Whereas countries like India sees the same concept as Mercy Killing and it is vividly illegal to practice.
The concept could be broadly divided into 2 main categories- Active and Passive Euthanasia. The former one is when someone uses lethal substances or forces to end a patientβs life, whether by the patient or somebody else while the latter one explains when life-sustaining treatments are withheld.
This could further be divided into 3 types -
Voluntary Euthanasia - Is when the patient decides to end their lives to be free of pain and suffering.
Involuntary Euthanasia - is performed on a person who would be able to provide informed consent, but does not, either because they do not want to die, or because they were not asked. It is usually against the will of the patient.
Non- Voluntary Euthanasia - occurs when the person is unconscious or otherwise unable to make a meaningful choice between living and dying, and an appropriate person takes the decision on their behalf. In such a case, predominately a living will is prepared which is a legal document by which any person can lay down instructions for what specific actions should be taken (or not taken) regarding their health if they are unable to make decisions for themselves in the future.
Euthanasia, in my opinion, is one own will and choice. No guidelines or law can state one's will to live or to die. If an individual can hold the Right to Live or can he/she execute their Right to Die.
Death is an ultimate end but how can anyone decide that for anyone else other than their own self, and let's not forget for a majority of people life isn't seen as realistic or joyfully that isn't supposed to me.
What good is a life where you cant monitor your own breathing? The only thing that keeps us alive each second of our day...
