What are Nails?

Skin cells are used to create fingernails and toenails. Skin appendages are structures created from skin cells. Another skin appendage is hair. Technically speaking, the "nail plate" is what we refer to as the nail. Keratin, a dense material, makes up the majority of the nail plate.

Healthy fingernails are flat and free of grooves or pits. They lack any stains or degradation and are uniform in colour and consistency. Innocent vertical ridges that extend from the cuticle to the tip of the nail can occasionally form on fingernails. With age, vertical ridges tend to grow more pronounced.

Why does our fingernails grow faster than toenails?

The nail's root is where the nail grows. Nails typically develop at a pace of 0.5 millimetres per week. varied nails have varied rates of growth. Toenails grow around four times as quickly as fingernails do. The middle finger of the hand experiences faster nail growth than the little finger, which occurs more slowly. The nails on the other fingers grow at an intermediate rate. Some diseases, as well as local trauma, can cause disturbances in nail growth.

Climate affects nail growth as well. Summer is the growing season, not winter. It has been noted that a cold climate slows nail development. Additionally, it has been discovered that the rate of nail growth in high altitudes is significantly lower than that in plains. Protein malnutrition and other deficiency illnesses have an impact on nail development.
Since fingers are used more frequently than toes, fingernails naturally sustain greater wear and tear than toenails.

Therefore, an evolutionary adaptation to account for greater wear and tear resulted in more nail growth in fingers. Additionally, fingers receive more blood than toes do.

Toenails grow two to three times more slowly than fingernails do. A toenail takes a year to grow back, but a fingernail does so in around six months. In terms of the vascular system, the feet are the farthest away.
The fingers possibly move at a faster pace because of a higher blood supply. Since our fingers are busy than our toes, perhaps they are more prone to sustain damage and require replacement since nails are essentially defensive.

There are other details regarding nail growth. In warmer conditions, toe and fingernail nails grow more quickly. Men's nails grow faster than women's. The nails on your dominant hand grow faster. And the middle finger of your dominant hand is the speediest of all.
