There is a saying ‘silence speaks louder than words. Kim ki Duk stated in an interview "I want the audience to watch the characters more closely by reducing the dialogue as much as possible. Most movies have too much dialogue; I don't think words make everything understandable".
Let's start with the general. Kim ki Duk 2004 film 3 iron 1st was premiered at Venice film festival, 61th, competing for the golden lion. That year Kim ki Duk won the silver lion for direction.
The title ‘3 iron’ is derived from a type of golf club.
The film opens with an elegant marble sculpture of a woman looking softly downwards towards the earth. She is hidden behind a thin mesh curtain, followed by golf balls only careening towards her. She is only spared from the harsh blows because of the curtain game of golf, meant for relaxation, being used as a weapon against natural beauty and art. as a metaphor for men’s aggression on womanhood. The film's main character Tai-suk a lonely man on a motorcycle roams desolate streets. He leaves flyers on door handles to see if they are collected the next morning; if they are not, he breaks into the house, but not with the intent of robbing, but rather to live off the family's luxuries, never to exploit the family's material possessions, but rather to engage in the routines; he tries to understand their life through their belongings, take pictures with there family, he also cleans their house, washes their clothes, even fixes their electronics. One day he broke into a house not knowing there was a person scared and afflicted sitting at the corner, violence showing in her face as wounds. There he does menial tasks her husband calls and leaves a message on her answering machine, asking why she is dissatisfied and blaming her for the acts of violence on her wounded face. Tao Sook carefully prepares a simple meal while she watches from afar, then moves on to doing the couple's laundry and watering their plants, finally using the three iron as in the opening scene to act golf balls at a target, but now the staff fears the woman is no longer framed as the target and is off to the side, he takes a bath and casually flips through a book where he found the nude photos of that wife. He unsuccessfully tries to fix the weight machine. Tai suk masturbates on bed, is confronted by the wife without any words, phone rings again, it's her husband again, more threatening than the first time, Tai suk ready to leave the house, she screams at the phone. Tai suk sits beside the road contemplating what to do, he goes aak to the house, communicate with the battered woman, not with words with actions she lays shattered and crying at her tub he picks up her garments is that new clothing for her puts on soft music to let her know of his return and with the rolling of a golf ball he invites her to join him the three iron is being used as a symbol of peace and harmony, meanwhile her husband comes back, interrupts their playful game and scolds her for pointless reasons and grates her for the way she's dressed he half-heartedly apologises and says I love you to her but her cold responds back immediately ignites him into violence as he verbally abuses her. To catch the husband's attention, Tai suk grabs the three iron and weakens whacking balls at the target, then turns the balls towards him and uses the formerly playful three iron as a weapon. Tao suk and rode together on his motorcycle, and he continued his routine of placing flair door to door and enters empty houses. On their journey, they build emotion with each other.
The interesting thing about this movie is that the two protagonists have no dialogue. They communicate with each other through their facial expressions and emotions.
At the end of the film, before the climax, the lovers are separated; Tai Suk is in jail, and she lives with her husband, whose guilt grows by the day. She has changed a lot. She is no longer a person who sits and endures. Now she can payback. Another inconceivable thing happening at the jail is that Tai Suk is dying. Everyone can sense his pressure but they can't see him. When they unite once again, there is no one who becomes the barrier between them. The disappearance of Tai suk can be interpreted in some ways.He might actually be killed by those guards, and the scenes after that might actually be the dream sequence, or he might actually learn the act of disappearance, or this disappearance might be used as a metaphor. He disappears in others' eyes because he has no social acceptance in others' eyes, and he does not need it anymore. He becomes invisible and inaudible because he attains the ‘liminality’. Only Mirs Su can see him through her "inner eyes" and through love, which is the only thing that can propagate through time and space.
The very last scene of the film, in which they stand on that weight machine hugging each other, demonstrates that they are completely devoted to each other. The indicator shows zero weight as they found the harmony, they have completed.
Here I end my writing with a quote by Kim Ki Duk,
"WE ARE ALL EMPTY HOUSES WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO OPEN THE LOCK AND SET US FREE".
