Did you know? Pizza is the most loved delicacy in the world. But who invented it ? What's its origin? And how it became so popular?โ€ฆ Well, now that's interesting, pizza was first introduced in the city of Naples in Italy, Raffaele Esposito is often given the credit of making the first pizza. But the origin of pizza goes back to the ancient times. Greeks and Egyptians were cooking a pizza like flatbread and topping it with olive oil and spices. The โ€œ modern pizzaโ€ as we know it evolved in Naples Italy, when tomato was added to it in the late 18th century.

I am sure, none of us would ever deny to eat a pizza, right? Let's have a look at some interesting facts about our beloved โ€˜Pizzaโ€™.

The most expensive pizza in the world costs $12,000 . Luis XIII in Salerno, Italy has the most expensive pizza with a price tag of $12,000.

The United States eats 350 slices of pizza every second. Americans eat about 100 acres of pizza every day according to the National Association of Pizza operators.

A pizza was delivered in space. In 2001, the Russian Space Agency was paid more than a million bucks to deliver a six-inch pizza to the International Space Station. 

Pizza is a 37 billion dollar industry. It looks like pizza is great for the American economy.           

October is National Pizza Month. It was created by the publisher of Pizza Today magazine, Gerry Durnell in October 1984. It is now an annually celebrated event.

The most popular pizza topping is pepperoni. In Harris Poll taken in January 2016, pepperoni was found to be the most popular topping followed by sausage at number two.

The word โ€˜pizzaโ€™ was originated first in 997 AD in Gaeta, Italy. After that the name started to spread to different parts of  Central and Southern Italy.

The outer edge is called the โ€˜Cornicione'. This is the technical term for the crust, which is called as Cornicione or the โ€˜end crustโ€™.

Philadelphia has a pizza museum called โ€˜Pizza Brainโ€™ which is home to the world's largest collection of pizza memorabilia.

'Margherita Pizza' derived it's name from queen Margherita of Savoy in 1889 when she asked the master pizza chef Raffaele Esposito to make a pizza version of her with toppings of tomatoes, mozzarella and basil.

World Pizza Day is celebrated on 9th of February every year from 2000. From thick base to thin crust, pizza has come a long way and over a period of time, it has become one of our favourite. From house party to restaurant dinning and from movie date to Midnight cravings, pizza is found everywhere. It's cheesy and pepperoni flavoured taste craves us for it more and more.
