One of the main problems in India is dowry. We can see thousands of cases related to dowry. In India, nearly 8000 dowry-related death are reported almost every year. The real number is probably higher since many cases go unreported. And violence is just one consequence of dowry. There are other consequences too. For example,sex-selective abortion and female infanticide i.e when a family discovers the gender of the unborn child and decides to abort if it's a girl. I don't know that these people with such mentality are living till now.
For example in 1980s there was a huge rise in international gold prices.Researches have found that this led to an increase in girl mortality since parents probably perceived raising a girl as a financial burden due to dowry
In addition dowry has a great impact on a family's financial decision because research has shown that the value of dowry is nearly equal to a household nearly income and the families with a girl start saving more to fund her dowry. Whereas if they have a boy they would invest the money in business
Today the meaning of dowry is different than before. In the past it was offered to the daughters, now it's being offered to her in laws. This is despite the fact that there have been many anti-dowry reformers in India such as Satya Rani Chaddha she has led several campaigns against dowry
One reason could be that even as India has developed and many women have been educated it hasn't mean that more women has started working too they aren't involved in paid working. As compared to other developing countries India's female labour force participation rate is very low. There are many reasons for this. One of the reasons is that all household duties fall on women Thus they can't get involved in paid work. About 60% of women said that they do household work as no other member is willing to do it. In addition many in our societies believe that a women belonging to a well-off family should not work outside her home. It's a dire problem. But this doesn't mean there are no solutions. We need to be innovative while finding the solution because banning the practice of dowry won't make any differences. There have been laws against dowry but they have barely affected the practice of dowry.
