Feminism is greatly misunderstood and misused. Half of the people misunderstand the word. They think we want to steal the rights of men. Some misuse it for their own benefit. We have seen what the #metoo movement has become. While it has made girls come out of the darkness and speak up for their rights, on the other hand, some girls are misusing it for their own benefit. And because of those “some girls", the whole movement is being criticized by those who wanted it to be stopped. Why should it happen? Why are we allowing a movement so pure to taint?
They say that we are using unfair means to get equal to boys. But is equality what we really need? No, we don't. We need equity.
Most of us don't understand the difference between equality and equity. Equality is treating each individual the same. It means providing the same opportunity to everyone. Equity on the other hand recognizes the fact that each individual is different. It emphasizes providing different resources as per the requirement of each individual so that they may be equal. Both promote fairness but we need equity instead of equality because men and women are different.
We need equity, but isn't equity a vast term? So, what do we really want? We want opportunities. We don't need reservations. We want to earn those positions provided we get opportunities. We want equal pay. If we are working for the same position, working the same amount, we need the same payment. We don't want to be dependent on a man to protect us when we walk on a dark lane. We want to have fun with our friends late at night and not be raped. We want to feel safe. We want to wear whatever we wish without being stared at, teased, slut-shamed, or raped. We don't want to be discriminated against based on our marital status. We don't want to be feel bad for earning more than our husbands. We don't want to belong only to the kitchen. We don't want a man to be the key to our freedom. We want to live life on our own terms.
This list goes on and on. Women are suppressed. No one wants to handle a strong woman. That's what feminism is for. It is the voice of oppressed and suppressed women all over the world. Nowadays even some men are supporting this movement. The list is long and our will to make the next generation better for women is stronger. And I know one day we'll achieve this. But, I just wanted to know, it too much to ask for?
