Can you live in space without a spacesuit and an oxygen cylinder?? Probably not , but Tardigrades can survive in such conditions . Tardigrades  a sort of microorganisms  can survive for years without food or water for years .They can survive in hot weathers of Sahara desert as well as in freezing arctic region .These microorganisms also called as water bears are found everywhere in every drastic conditions . Even any chemical  can’t kill them . So they are said to be practically immortal.

As per our observations they survive such conditions by undergoing a dormant ‘’tun’’ stage to remain alive in harsh conditions  and survive from radiations by glowing  in extreme conditions .

That’s why according to some scientists life may have come to earth through inter-planetary migration  of these water bears . And it is also said that they would have created many living earths like ours by inter-planetary migration .

So ,are they really mortal . No, some recent study suggested that our theory of inter-planetary migration  of Tardigrades  may be wrong .

As per a  new studies tardigrades  are completely killed in boiling water of about 100 degrees in a day  . Previous research found that tardigrades could even survive being boiled at up to 303.8 F (151 C) for an hour, Neves told Live Science. But no one had studied how tardigrades handle heat for longer periods.

The research team exposed tardigrades of the freshwater species Ramazzottius varieornatus to temperatures of up to 104 F (40 C) in increments of 2, 24 or 48 hours . After 48 hours at 104 F, all tardigrades in the active state died. At 98.6 F (37 C), about 46% of the active tardigrades died within 48 hours. Acclimation helped, though. Active tardigrades that went through the acclimation steps had a 72% survival rate at 48 hours, meaning just 28% died.

Also  another experiment  showed that these can be killed by firing them from  a gun . This experiment is conducted after an Israeli  spacecraft  crash-landed  on moon . Researchers loaded the freezed dormant tardigrades  in nylon bullets  and fired them  from a 5 meter long instrument called two stage light gas gun . It fired   these  with a speed ranging from 550 to 1000 meters per second  on sand bags. Firing  with a speed more than 825 meters on sand bags  proved to be lethal for some of these . Although some got injured and revived after remaining in water for few hours .

So from the above data it can be concluded that TARDIGRADES ARE NOT ALWAYS IMMORTAL .
