Recently we have heard a lot of news about mothers harming their children. Nowadays, there are several cases of mothers murdering their children. What do you guys think of it? Can a mother can do such a thing by being fully conscious? Why does this occur? Many of us think that it is because they are selfish and cruel. They don't have any sympathy or love towards their children. Is it the real reason?
There may be several reasons. One of the major reasons is the psychological state of the mother after the delivery. It's an important aspect. After giving birth to a child, a mother will undergo both physical and mental changes. It will be difficult to adapt to these new changes. This may result in a state called Postpartum Depression. This is a serious psychological disorder that affects the mothers.
Let's first look into what is depression. Depression is a common and significant medical illness that adversely influences how you feel, the way you think and how you act. It is a mood disorder that results in a constant feeling of distress and loss of interest in things and actions you once liked. Depression is considered to be an unseen illness.
Postpartum depression is a type of depression that occurs in women after delivering their child. Most new moms undergo postpartum depression after labor, which commonly includes mood changes, crying, distress and trouble sleeping. Postpartum depression commonly starts within the first two to three days after childbirth and may persist for up to 2 weeks or longer. Mothers who have postpartum depression or psychosis tend to hurt or kill their children. So postpartum depression needs to be considered seriously.
Symptoms
Some of the symptoms are:
▪ mood swings
▪ insomnia or hypersomnia
▪ keeps distance from closed ones
▪ loss of interest in yourself and your baby
▪ suicidal tendency
▪ anxiety and desperation
▪ difficulty in making a connection with your baby
▪ exhaustion and lack of energy
▪ the feeling of low self-esteem
However, there are no exact reasons for postpartum depression. It may be genetic, physical or emotional. Treatments are available for this condition. It is important to identify the condition at the beginning. Sometimes symptoms may be difficult to differentiate from baby blues. Baby Blue is in a state of depression and anxiety after giving birth to a child for a few days. It's a common problem that usually disappears after a few days.
Being a parent is both exciting as well as tiring. So to overcome this state, a mother needs care and support from her family. Some of them are not aware of this condition. In such a situation they may blame the mother for such behaviour. This may result in more complications. Listening to the mother's feelings, giving support to her decisions, and reassuring her is important. Avoiding comparison with others is crucial. Let her know that, she is not alone in this situation and that always being there for her will help her to overcome this condition.
