In every sense of the term, the Vivo X90 Pro+ is a phone that is overkill. It's the so-called "kitchen sink" phone because Vivo reportedly threw every piece of mobile technology at it, from the needlessly lengthy name to the garish over-branding on its back; the enormous camera bump to the cutting-edge components employed. Only a couple smartphones—the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra—have made their debut with as much "new" hardware in all the years I've reviewed cellphones. The Vivo X90 Pro+ has been added.
The gadget and the complete Vivo X90 series are now only available in China, but a launch in Europe and Asia is on the way, most likely in January. Unfortunately, this phone won't be officially available in North America. Even if that's the case, the X90 Pro+ is an impressive phone that has drawn notice for its outstanding camera.
The Vivo X90 Pro+, especially the red color model I'm testing, features an eye-catching rear design that could be controversial. Somehow off-center is the huge camera bump that sticks out half an inch from the body. A metallic bar that runs horizontally divides the ruby red vegan leather (fancy plastic intended to seem like leather) that wraps around the back. However, there is also a more subdued black variant. Normally, I would like the contrast-enhancing metal bar that has been added, but this one is denoted by the gaudy statement "Xtreme Imagination — Vivo/Zeiss co-engineered." Every time I look at it, I snort.
There are four locations where Zeiss logo can be found on the rear of the phone, including this metallic bar. The camera module itself also has a final Zeiss T logo in addition to the Zeiss logo, "Zeiss Vario Tessar" wording that is often found in Zeiss camera lenses, and the text. Vivo should really learn from Huawei, Xiaomi, or Oppo: Just because you've collaborated with a venerable camera brand doesn't mean you should allow its branding to permeate the whole device.
Assuming anybody from Vivo is reading this, I strongly advise removing the "Xtreme Imagination" wording for the international model (if it hasn't already been done so during the production process), since I'm sure I won't be the only English critic to make fun of it.
Despite this, I still believe that the phone looks... good? When I'm not gazing at cheesy slogans and logos, I still like the general appearance because I've always liked circular camera modules with leather backs.
