Predator, a classic movie from 1987 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, continues to maintain a particular place in moviegoers' hearts. Director Shakti Soundar Rajan wanted to Indianize the idea and present it as Captain thirty years later. Captain is what you get when you add a needless love storyline and a few additional sentiments. Voila!

Army captain Vetri Selvan (Arya), who is an orphan, is introduced in detail in the opening scene of Captain. He claims that his team is his family and that he would do anything to keep them safe. Vetri leads a team of military personnel, both male and female, but he moves so slowly during a mission that you want to shout at the screen and beg him to hurry up. He is given the task of entering Sector 42, a restricted wooded area where people have mysteriously perished. His companion Karthi Devan (Harish Uthaman), who accompanies him and his squad into the forest, tries to shoot at them but ultimately kills himself.

Here comes scientist Dr. Keerthi (Simran), who has a bit more knowledge of the jungle than the soldiers. She claims that in order to start the civilian movement at the location, the being—which they refer to as the Minotaur—should be killed. Now, Keerthi and Vetri work with his team to create a strategy for locating the Minotaur, learning about its past, and eliminating the monster (s).

Moviegoers have made it a habit to anticipate something fresh from Shakti Soundar Rajan over the years. Every one of his movies would be recognised as the "first Tamil cinema" to do something. He has tried the man vs beast idea with Captain. Despite how ambitious the idea of Indianizing the genre may sound, it requires a sizable budget to be implemented. And this is where Captain utterly fails.

The plot of Captain is really shallow and contains elements from venerable Tamil movies and soap operas. Second, the VFX is poor and fails to convey the mood that was desired. Third, there are significant logical flaws that ruin the overall experience. For instance, right before the intermission, Dr. Keerthi, Vetri, and his team are encircled by numerous Minotaurs, and we anticipate a full-scale conflict. However, the crew is back in the lab at the military base camp as the second half gets underway. I suppose the Minotaurs chose to spare them so the movie could continue for an additional 45 minutes.
