The novel Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki Krishnamurthy has finally been adapted into a feature film after an almost seven-decade wait, and by none other than the legendary director Mani Ratnam. He assembled a massive celebrity ensemble to create this historical drama. The two-part movie was co-produced by Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies. Part 1 of the highly anticipated, high-budget movie has just been released. Check to see whether it met or exceeded expectations.
Story:
Due to his failing health, the monarch of the Chola dynasty assigns Sundara Choludu (Prakash Raj) the duties of managing the realm. Sundara Choludu eventually gives it to his son Aditya Karikaaludu (Vikram). The son of the deceased monarch of the Chola dynasty and true successor, Madhuranthakudu (Rehman), is saddened by this choice. In order to decide their next course of action, they arrange a covert conference in Kadambur with the assistance of another monarch, Pallavaraaya (Sarathkumar).
On the other hand, Aditya Karikaaludu becomes suspicious that there is a plot taking place within the kingdom and instructs Vallavarayan Vanthiyadevudu (Karthi), his army commander, to uncover the truth. Has Vallavarayan finished the job? What role does Nandhini (Aishwarya Rai) play in this narrative? How did Aditya's brother Ponniyin Selvan Arunmozhi, the next ruler of the Chola dynasty, put an end to this plot? To find out all the answers, watch the movie.
Plus Points:
Although there are numerous characters in this pan-Indian enterprise, Karthi is given the main role in the first episode. He makes this historically accurate period play enjoyable. His scenes with ladies in which he flirts are amusing. The actor gave his best for the movie and makes viewers laugh every time he is on screen.
Minus Points:
The narrative of the movie is intriguing, but there is a lot more drama than is necessary for the average spectator to understand what is happening. The first segment alone has so much information that showcasing it would require two parts. The script occasionally gets muddled and complicated.
Technical Aspects:
According to reports, PS 1 was developed on a big scale, and the production qualities are astounding. This epic narrative gains greater value because to Thota Tharrani's production design. The filmmakers chose more realistic settings and ensured that the pictures looked beautiful. They are also pleasing to the sight.
Verdict:
Ponniyin Selvan part: 1 has a solid tale overall, however it is uninteresting and lacks the necessary high moments. Mani Ratnam's disappointing direction detracts from the primary cast's performances, excellent production values, and excellent visuals. Particularly the first half is convoluted since too many characters are presented. The tale will resonate more with the Tamil audience, but if you enjoy seeing historical dramas with a large cast, you may give this Telugu movie a try. Just keep your hopes realistic.
