My Covid ICU duty started on 3 may 2021, during this time, cases in India and particularly in Maharashtra rising rapidly. i just passed my Final year MBBS exam, and started my new journey as Doctor. I was posted in covid icu, in navi mumbai. As Newly earned title of Doctor, i was very excited to work in covid, and yes i was scared a bit also. My parents were concerned, as i didn't got my first dose of Vaccine, but i convinced myu parents and they agreed. I was Posted in ICU for the first month. Just passed first year and posted in Covid ICU at the very first month.
My first duty was night shift which is for 8 hours. (11pm to 7pm). i had my dinner around 9 pm, had plenty of water and started reading some books. around 10.45 pm, I left for Hospital. it takes 10 minutes to reach hospital from my home. i went to hospital, They gave us PPE kit. We are group of three interns posted in ICU, we donned our PPE kits, gloves, masks, head cover. when i went to icu for the first time, ICU was divided in 3 sections, DICU1, DICU2, DICU3. each ICU had 12 patients each. I was astounded to see such busy ICU. Everyone was wearing PPE kits. As our First Day, we were told to observe and learn and ask if any doubts came to mind. It was night duty, I introduced myself to other doctors, nurses. Senior Nurse showed us what they do and what we have to do. How we have to take care of ourselves? how frequently we have to sanitize our hands and change gloves. After 2-3 hours one emergency patient came, his spo2 levels were 50, he was breathless and his HRCT score was 18/25. patients was unconscious, senior Dr. started working on patient. They put patient on NIV mask and gave him medicines. nurse quickly drew blood and started IV line. It happened so quick and so fast. after watching all of this and understanding my way around ICU how time spent i didn't understand. Around 4 am Senior Dr. went to take rest. We were told to do the same. Around 6o clock, person from laboratory came and showed us how to take blood sample for various tests and showed us how to take ABG(arterial blood gas). after learning all of this, my duty was over. It was wonderful experience
