This is a story about a family who lived in a Mumbai slum. Raju and his wife worked at a construction site for earning money. They had an only a daughter, Chinki. They have the same daily routine, In the morning they left for work after packing a tiffin box for them and tell Chinki to take care of her and while reaching home from school do not forget to eat her lunch. In the evening they come back from the construction site and Raju's wife makes her food and then they talked about how was their day and go to sleep.
One night, Chinki was awake and saw his father opening that wooden box and he was seeing a photo frame and there was one stopwatch. Raju looked at that photo frame for some time and put it in the box again, after that, he holds a stopwatch and touches that stopwatch to his heart and took a long breath, and go to sleep. Chinki gets curious to know that what's inside that wooden box? After some time she saw his father was sleeping so she woke up and tried to touch that box. So, she slides one table under that box and climbs it, and was about to open that box. Her mom asked - “ What are you doing Chinki?” She gets nervous and said - “ I… I want that doll.” Her mother said - “ Okay.” Her mother gave her a doll and after that Chinki go to sleep.
The next day Raju and his wife go to work and tells Chinki to take care of her, as usual. Chinki opened that wooden box, she saw that photo frame - 'one old man was handing over a paper to his father.' & that shining, golden stopwatch she also touches that stopwatch to her heart but nothing happened. When she was pitting that stopwatch back, A horn sound came from the road, and that stopwatch fells down. She was very worried that what she will tell his father about that stopwatch. Evening happened, they came back home and have dinner. Chinki has not slept yet, Raju opened that wooden box he saw a photo frame and when he looks at the stopwatch he gets shocked, he put that again in the wooden box. He did not sleep that night and the next morning he went to the construction site for work. He was sad and that day he left for work without telling Chinki to take care of her. Chinki did not go to school that day, she took that broken stopwatch from a wooden box.
She saw an incompletely prepared basket near that box, she completed that basket and make another nine baskets. She took that broken stopwatch and ten baskets and move towards the market. Near signal, she stood and trying to sell that baskets but did not found anyone who gave money instead of her baskets. Chinki was tired and losing her hope sits down on the footpath. When the signal turns red, a car stops in front of Chinki. car's window opens and she saw a man was smiling and waved a hand towards Chinki.
Chinki gets up and tells him to buy baskets. He bought that ten baskets but asked her- “ Why do you need money?” Chinki replied holding a broken stopwatch in her hand -" I want to fix this." Then the man gave Chinki 100 rupees note and drop her at the watch repairing shop. The shopkeeper was about to close the shop, she said I want this watch to get repaired. After an hour she was very happy because that broken stopwatch was fixed now.
She was late when she reached home Raju and his wife are asking neighbors for Chinki. She had dinner and put that stopwatch on the wooden box. At midnight, Raju gets up and about to open that wooden box, he saw that stopwatch. He holds that stopwatch and touches it to his heart and took a long breath. He looked back, Chinki was smiling. Raju tells Chinki that this stopwatch was gifted by his favorite professor during college time. They talked the whole night about Raju's college life and when they see outside, the sun was rising….❤
