Haptics is derived from a Greek word known as “haptikos” which means a sense of touch or sense of felt. Haptics is a science or technology that uses touch to transmit or understand information, and also interact with users and manage the system like a computer. Haptics is the term equivalent to touch and connection.

What is Haptic technology?

  • Haptic technology is a form of new emerging technology that interacts with users and an interface that uses haptic feedback that transfers data to the user.
  •  In haptic technology, the information provided is termed haptic information also known as haptic feedback. Haptic Feedbacks are of two types that is tactile feedback and kinesthetic feedback.
  • Tactile feedback refers to the information obtained by the sensor connected to the body, while kinesthetic feedback refers to sensors in the joints
  • Haptic senses connect to the brain's sensing part and activity of the body by means of receptive nerves that are present within the joints and muscles.
  • A haptic system contains sensors, actuators (motors to control the circuit), software, and API(Application programming interface) that contain libraries and a special OS of the product.
  • Haptic devices also called haptic interfaces are mechanical devices that act as interfaces between machines (computers) and users. The types of haptic devices are as follows:
  1. Virtual Reality (VR) or Telerobotics-based devices: These devices mostly include exoskeletons and fixed devices, gloves and wearable devices, point sources and typical task devices, and locomotion interfaces.
  2. Feedback devices: They are two types that are force feedback devices and tactile display devices

Limitations of haptic technology

The haptic devices and applications are costlier, and heavier in weight and size (mostly the wearables), much more complex, need highly advanced hardware and an adequate amount of power for processing.

Applications of Haptic technology

There are plenty of applications, research, and developments in this technology, some of the applications are listed below:

  1. Gaming: Haptics helps in enhancing the experience of gaming. The software used enables you to program force feedback sensations to your game controller i.e. button press.
  2. Military: Military training for cadets in a virtual environment. In terms of particular applications like transmitting data of terrain or texture, haptics plays the main role as an efficient communication channel.
  3. It is a useful technology for blind and visually impaired people. It may help them to study feel maps, and study a subject like maths by tracing touchable mathematical courses.
  4. Medical applications: During and after surgery of the patient using machine setup and medical staff. For medical training and surgical simulation.
  5. Textile industry: To examine and feel the quality and texture of fabric cloth via the internet.
  6. In Museum: For exhibiting virtual arts, sculpture collection of decorative arts and designs in 3D technique, that are kept available in CD-ROM form.

Conclusion

Haptics Technology is one of the unusual and leading technologies that can change the future world in a sensible way. In the future, it can be used in smartwatches, smart mobiles and devices, and in gaming consoles, etc.

More further developments, 3D visual products, systems on laptops and desktops, and many creations are possible with this technology. It is rising in medical applications and holographic interactions, neuroscience, robotic design, graphic design, etc. It is one of the key applications of Virtual Reality, it has a key role in its devices and simulations.
